Tools of the Trade - Footwear
People often ask me “Hey Mark, what are the best pair of shoes for being a floor guy?” and I always am pleased that they ask.
Different surfaces have different requirements.
Carpet Installation - you’re often working in clean socks to eliminate any potential of tracking dirt and debris on someone’s brand new floor, so the shoes are coming on/off frequently. I also like to use a gum-rubber sole as it tends to absorb less oil and grime than your typical rubber running-shoe type bottom goes. If you’re on a commercial job and you are shuffling around carpet tile, you also need a little more durability with a suede toe - leather tends to wear off quickly with carpet friction. So, for all those practical applications, I go with an Adidas Samba with my shoe of choice for carpet/rug work.
Hardwood Floor installation - For hardwood floor installs, comfort and support are key. You’ve brought your tools into the worksite so you’re not in and out of the house too much, but you’re on your feet more than you’re on your knees, so you want something comfortable. I use a running shoe for these kinds of installations as they give me some support and comfort. Gum Rubber soles are a plus on prefinished floors as they minimize scuffs.
Hardwood Floor Sand and Finish - So the one time I don’t use a gum-rubber sole and go for a typical work boot is when I’m sanding and finishing a floor. For the past 10 years, when sanding and finishing a floor, or when on a site where safety boots or appropriate footwear are required, I wear Irish Setter’s Ashby boot (https://www.irishsetterboots.com/work-boots/soft-toe-boots/Ashby/83605.html?srsltid=AfmBOooAgaFkV9QHzw70qmSTgAatuCiBGDsASA2cWnqVfcMc9wn5WKpl). It’s a wide fit, it’s thick leather, and the stitching on the toe is superb. I’ve only gone through two pair in 10 years, and never had an issue. They’re a great all around boot and performer.
During the summers, I may go bold and even go with a sandal for a carpet installation for the above mentioned reason. Since my kids all rock Crocks, I may give them a shot for any carpet or vinyl work.
Always open to new ideas, maybe hospital socks with a grip textured bottom would be the next option!
Have a great day yall.
Mark
